Description

Jan Bernard's extensive professional monograph, devoted to the world's leading Czech and Czech director Jan Němec, offers a comprehensive picture of his work in historical, political, economic and aesthetic contexts. Jan Němec worked in different countries and times in completely different production conditions. The first part of the book deals with the years 1954 – 1974, when the German first studied at FAMU, shot within the Czechoslovak Army Studio, worked as an assistant director, assistant director and finally as a director at the Barrandov Film Studio. As part of the co-productions and independently, he worked for Italian and American producers and experienced world fame and domestic political persecution. His creative destinies thus significantly intertwined with the historical events of the development of Czechoslovakia, especially in the 1960s. The book works with a number of archival materials, photographs, with published and unpublished interviews with the German and his collaborators, with domestic and foreign critics of his films, and brings knowledge not only about them, but also about a number of his unrealized projects.
