Underneath the Dress
A special seminar session focused on Ester Krumbachová’s texts on fashion and costume creation for film and theatre.
Faculty of Arts, Charles University
1 December 2025, 2–4 PM
We will read archival texts by Ester Krumbachová—such as Underneath the Dress III, What Is a Theatre Costume?, and her lecture on costume creation written as a letter for American students—and screen excerpts from films in which she worked across multiple positions as art director, costume designer, scriptwriter, director, and/or dramaturge. We will draw from Marketa Uhlirova’s text The Costume-Phantoms of Ester Krumbachová, published in ESTER KRUMBACHOVÁ (2021).
Organized as part of the course Dressing up Oneself and the Society: Fashion in 19th- and 20th-Century Aesthetics, lectured by Linda Muchová, with guests from the editorial team of @ester_krumbachova_archive.
The seminar and follow-up discussion will be held in English.
Several of Krumbachová’s texts on fashion and costume creation are available at esterkumbachova.org under Collections → About costume.
